It’s the first Monday of 2013. The kids are back in school. I am working frantically away, trying to catch up on emails and work from the last two weeks.
And working on a new product launch. Writing a few books. Planning some events. Procuring items for our school auction. Writing future blog posts. Wrangling payments from clients. Laundry, dog walking, putting Christmas away, cooking, cleaning the office.
Those things too…
I don’t normally choose a Word of the Year, but this year I decided I needed to. For my own sanity and to help clarify my path, I needed to. So I chose two:
FOCUS and LAUNCH.
FOCUS…on one thing at a time. Sounds ridiculous, but I need to do this. It is the only way I can truly be productive. Sure, I can multitask with the best of them, but lately I’ve been mega multitasking, which is actually counterproductive.
FOCUS means making my daughter a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and resisting the urge to clean the kitchen, respond to those 6 texts that just came in the last 2 minutes, refill the water filter, and start a new load of laundry at the same time. FOCUS means: just making my daughter a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Period. Then moving on to the next task. I need to stop starting so many things at once and not finishing the majority of them.
This has unfortunately applied to many work projects in the past two years. Which leads me to my second word…
LAUNCH…to propel into action. Yes, I am launching new eBooks, new online learning courses, new Twitter chats, lots of new items this year to keep the business moving forward. Yet more than the specifics, I need to feel the weight of the word LAUNCH behind my back at all times. I need to move forward more. I need to keep going and not quit.
Get up. Get moving. FOCUS. Finish. LAUNCH.
What is your word of the year? I’d love to know. Let’s keep each other motivated!
